From US$150 a person, based on four of you sharing. The truck is US$599 for up to four people, three and a half hours, with return transport in it. A modified Land Rover Defender with a professional driver and a guide, off the tarmac and onto the tracks, and an island picnic in the middle of it. The trucks carry a published weight limit of 280 lb a person and it is enforced. It suits anyone who wants the parts of the island a coach cannot get to, and it is the wrong tour for a bad back.
What it costs
| Party | Total | Per person | Agency rate at US$132 each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | US$599 | US$599 | US$132 |
| 2 people | US$599 | US$300 | US$264 |
| 3 people | US$599 | US$200 | US$396 |
| 4 people | US$599 | US$150 | US$528 |
| 5 people | US$744 | US$149 | US$660 |
| 6 people | US$889 | US$148 | US$792 |
The price covers the truck, the professional driver and the guide, the island picnic, and return transport from Basseterre or Frigate Bay. Children 3 to 12 count inside the party of four. Cruise passengers leave from Port Zante and hotel guests are collected at the hotel. Pickup from anywhere else costs extra and we quote it with the booking. Drinks beyond what comes with the picnic are not included.
Two people pay US$599 and three people pay US$599. The price is for the truck, and it is the same whether two of you ride in it or four.
If we have another booking on your date we will offer to pair you with it and bring the price down, and the booking form asks whether you are willing to share.
What do you actually see from the truck?
The vehicles are Land Rover Defenders, modified for the tracks, with a professional driver at the wheel and a guide alongside him. Nobody in your party drives.
Halfway through, the truck stops and the picnic comes out. That is in the price.
What the route takes in depends on the day, the ground and the weather, and the operator sets it. We do not publish a stop list we cannot hold you to. Put what you want to see on the booking form and we will take it to them before you pay.
Two other versions are priced on request. One is a sugar heritage run, covering the 350 years of cane production that built this island, with plantation visits and mountain viewpoints. The mountain those viewpoints look at is Mount Liamuiga, 3,792 ft. The other includes a rainforest walk out to Carib petroglyphs, carvings cut into the rock here long before anyone planted cane on it.
How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?
Three and a half hours, picnic included.
Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, which is why almost every excursion sold on this island runs three to five hours. Cruise passengers leave from Port Zante, a few minutes from the ship. A morning departure has you back with time in hand. Put your all-aboard time on the form and we will work backwards from it.
What should you bring?
Closed shoes or trainers. You get out at the picnic and you walk a trail on the rainforest version, and the ground is loose underfoot.
Sun cover. You are out of the vehicle at the picnic and at the viewpoints, both in the open.
A light layer. The rainforest side of the island gets a passing shower most afternoons and it stops as fast as it starts.
Cash in small notes. US currency is accepted on this tour and across the island, and small notes go further than large ones.
Who should not book this one
The weight limit is 280 lb a person, about 127 kg. It is published and the operator enforces it at the vehicle.
The tracks are rough for long stretches. Do not book this one with a back or neck problem, and do not book it in late pregnancy.
You have to be able to get yourself in and out of a high vehicle several times without help.
The child rate runs from 3 to 12. If you have an infant under 3, ask, and we will get the answer from the operator. We will not guess at anything that young.
What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?
Rain is normal here and the tour runs in it. What stops it is ground the trucks cannot hold, and if the operator calls it off for that you get the whole amount back or a slot on another day, whichever you want.
If your ship arrives late, your pickup moves with it. We book against the ship’s actual arrival and not its scheduled one. If the call is cancelled, or the ship skips St Kitts entirely, you pay nothing and anything already paid comes back in full.
Book it
Tell us your date, how many adults and children, your pickup point, and your ship name if you are on one. Five or more in the party, say so, because that takes a second truck and changes the price. Tell us too whether you are willing to share with another booking. We confirm with the operator and come back to you within one working day, and the payment link comes last.
Questions people ask
What is the weight limit, and is it really enforced?
280 lb a person, about 127 kg. It is published by the operator and it is not waived at the vehicle.
What do the booking sites charge for the same thing?
About US$132 a head, so US$528 for four against our US$599. We are above them at every party size and we would rather you saw that in the table than found it out later. What the difference buys is the whole truck for your party, with the route theirs to ask about, and the per-person figure falling as you add people instead of climbing. There is no taxi comparison on this one. A taxi stays on the tarmac.
Can you pay in US dollars?
Yes. US currency is accepted on this tour and everywhere else on the island.
Is the picnic a proper meal?
It is an island picnic and it is in the price. The operator decides what goes in it. Tell us on the form if anyone has a dietary restriction and we will have that answered before you pay.
Can we book the sugar heritage or the petroglyph version?
Yes, both are priced on request. Say which one on the form and we will come back with a figure. The heritage run covers 350 years of cane production with plantation visits and mountain viewpoints. The other one takes in a rainforest walk to the Carib petroglyphs.
