Private boat charter

Your own boat for three and a half hours, with a captain and a mate and nobody else aboard but your party. From US$929 for up to six guests, US$105 for each extra adult and US$55 for each extra child. Departures are 09:00 or 13:00, seven days a week, with a snorkel stop and a beach stop in between. It is the one to take for a birthday, for an anniversary, or when the shared catamaran only sails on days you are not here.

Food is not listed in the charter price. Tell us on the form if you want lunch on board and we will come back with what the boat can do and what it adds, instead of guessing at a figure here. Tips are not included. Towels are not listed in the charter either, so bring your own.

What do you actually get for the money?

A boat with nobody else on it. That is most of the answer, and it is the whole reason people pay the difference.

The captain and the mate run the trip around your group. If your children last twenty minutes in the water and want the beach, you go to the beach. If one of you wants an hour at the reef, you have an hour. Nobody is waiting on the schedule of twenty strangers.

Snorkel gear comes with the boat for everybody aboard. The mate gets in the water with the group and stays there. St Kitts has no lifeguards on any beach or at any reef, no warning flags anywhere, and Canada’s government travel advice says rescue services here may not meet international standards, so the crew in the water is how this is managed on every boat we sell.

The open bar runs the same way as every snorkel trip on the island. Soft drinks from the start, alcohol once the swimming is finished and everyone is back aboard.

Then a beach stop, picked on the day for the sea state and for what your group wants out of it.

How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?

Three and a half hours on the standard charter, with departures at 09:00 and 13:00.

The 09:00 slot is the one for a ship day. Most calls in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, so a nine o’clock departure has you back by half twelve with hours in hand. The 13:00 slot works on a long call and it is tight on a short one, so tell us your all aboard time and we will say plainly which one to take.

Two hours and five hours are both available instead, priced when you ask.

What should you bring?

Towels, one each. They are not listed in what the charter covers.

Swimsuits on under your clothes, so the first stop is not spent changing.

Sun cover for everybody, and more of it for the children. A boat has shade in one place and your group will not all be sitting in it.

Seasickness tablets for anyone prone to it, taken before you board.

Cash in small notes. The captain and the mate are two people, and most groups tip them both.

Anything that makes it a party. It is your boat, so if there is a playlist or a cake or a banner, bring it and tell us in advance so the crew can make room.

Who should not book this one

Anyone who wants to be in the water at the snorkel stop has to be able to swim. The boat itself needs nothing of you, and a vest is there for a nervous swimmer, but open water with the crew beside you is still open water.

Children come with an adult who stays responsible for them, on deck and in the water.

If your group is bigger than six, say the number on the form before you plan anything. The extra guest rate is set, and the boat still has a limit, and we would rather tell you now than on the dock.

What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?

Sea state cancels a charter and that call is the captain’s. If it is called off you pay nothing and everything already paid comes back in full, deposit included.

These run seven days a week, which is the advantage of a charter over the shared sailings. A lost date can usually be moved to the next day, and we will put that to the captain before anyone talks about a refund. If your ship arrives late, tell us as soon as you know and we will ask what else is open that day.

Book it

Tell us your date, your two preferred times, how many adults and children, where you are staying, and the occasion if there is one. Dates are first come first served, so an early date is worth sending even if your numbers are not final.

The payment on this page works differently from the rest of the site. A charter takes a deposit when you book, which is what holds the boat on your date, and the balance is due before the trip. We confirm the slot and come back to you within one working day with the deposit figure, and nothing is charged before that confirmation.

Questions people ask

Why is a charter so much more than seats on the shared catamaran?

Because you are buying the boat. Six adults on the shared sail and snorkel trip come to US$630, and you share the deck, the ladder and the snorkel stop with whoever else booked that day. A charter starts at US$929 and the only people aboard are yours. There is no statutory taxi fare and no gate price to hold a private hire against, which makes this the one product on the site with nothing to compare it to, so the honest comparison is the shared trip and what you give up on it.

How many people fit?

The price covers up to six. Beyond that it is US$105 an adult and US$55 a child, up to the boat’s limit, and we confirm that limit with the captain for your date before you pay anything.

When is the deposit taken, and how much?

It comes with your confirmation, within one working day of your request, and the balance is due before you sail. Tell us if a card has to be a particular one and we will work around it.

Can we do a sunset charter instead?

Yes. That is the two hour version and it is priced on request, so send your date and your numbers and we will quote it.

Is lunch available?

Ask and we will find out for your date. Nothing about food is in the standard charter price, so we are not going to print a menu we cannot stand behind.

Do we tip the crew?

Tips are appreciated and not required. Ten to fifteen percent is normal here, and on a charter it is usually split between the captain and the mate.
