Mount Liamuiga volcano hike

A guided climb to the crater rim of Mount Liamuiga, the highest point in St Kitts at 3,792 ft. Six hours door to door, US$139 a person, leaving at 8:30am. It is rated moderate to strenuous, and it suits people who already walk hills at home because they enjoy it. If that is not you, take the rainforest hike.

What is the hike actually like?

The truck takes you out to the trailhead and the walking starts there. You climb through farmland, then into rainforest, then out onto open ground near the top. The rim is at 3,792 ft and there is nothing higher on the island.

It is steep. The ground is mud for most of the year with roots across the path, and the last stretch to the rim is a scramble on hands as much as feet. Some groups carry on down inside the crater, where hikers report rope-assisted sections on the way back up.

Every hike we sell goes out with a guide and we will not sell you an unguided one. In May 2026 a visitor went up this mountain alone, called emergency services at about 2pm to say he was lost, and his body was found on 1 June after a six day search.

The St Kitts Tourism Authority opened a registration for hiking and trail guides in 2026 and closed it on 10 July, so the destination now has a registry of who is working the trails. We check that your guide is on it before we confirm your booking. Ask anyone else selling this hike whether they do the same.

How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?

Six hours, plus the drive each way.

Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm. Six hours of hiking on top of two transfers runs to the back end of that window with almost no margin, and one slow group or one late tender takes what little there is. So we will say it plainly: this one does not fit a short call. If your ship is in for the day and nothing more, book the rainforest hike instead. Four hours, the same 8:30am pickup, back at Port Zante by early afternoon with time to spare.

What should you bring?

Hiking boots, or trainers with a deep tread. Smooth soles and sandals are the reason people come down the last section on their backsides.

Long trousers. The path narrows and the plants on either side of it will mark bare legs.

A rain layer that packs small. The rainforest belt gets a passing shower most afternoons and the canopy holds the water long after it stops.

Sun cover for the open ground above the trees, and a bag you can carry hands-free. You will want both hands on the way down.

Who should not book this one

Anyone who is not already walking hills comfortably at home. Six hours. Moderate to strenuous. Steep and muddy throughout.

Anyone with a knee problem. The descent takes longer than the climb and it is the descent that hurts people.

Anyone with a heart condition, or anyone who stops for breath halfway up a flight of stairs.

Children under twelve. We do not sell this hike for them at any price.

The open-air safari truck that runs out to the trailhead carries a 280 lb per person weight limit, and the operators hold to it.

What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?

A passing shower changes nothing. The path is wet anyway and the guide keeps going.

Sustained heavy rain is a different matter. The guide can call it off at the trailhead or turn the group back part way up, and either way you pay nothing. Anything already paid comes back in full, with no fee and no credit note.

If your ship docks late we hold the pickup against the actual arrival, but a six hour hike has no slack in it. Past about an hour of delay we will tell you so and offer you the rainforest hike or the full amount back. You choose.

Book it

Tell us your date, how many of you, where to collect you, and your ship name if you are on one. We confirm the slot with the guide and come back to you within one working day, and only then do we send a payment link. Nothing is charged until the hike is confirmed.

Questions people ask

Can I take a taxi to the trailhead and walk up on my own?

There is no gate on Mount Liamuiga and no entry fee, so nobody will stop you. The 2021 statutory fare schedule sets no tour fare for the volcano either, because a drive to a trailhead and a hike up a mountain are two different things to buy. What we sell is the guide.

Do we reach the actual summit?

You reach the crater rim at 3,792 ft, which is the high point of the island. Going down inside the crater is a decision the guide makes on the day, on the ground, and it is not promised in the price.

How fit do I need to be?

Fit enough to walk uphill for about three hours and then back down on tired legs. If you walk hills at home most weeks you will finish it. If your walking is flat pavement, you will not enjoy it.

What if I cannot finish?

Say so early, before the steep section, and the guide will work out the turnaround with you. Tell us your party size when you book so a second guide can come where one is needed.

Do we tip the guide?

Tips are appreciated and not required. Ten to fifteen percent is normal here.
