The government sets the maximum taxi fare for every destination on this island and we charge US$15 on top to arrange the car and hold it for you. Both schedules are below in full, from the cruise port in Basseterre and from the airport. One fare covers the whole car one way for up to four people, so a family of four pays the one fare between them.
What it costs
| Price | What is in it | |
|---|---|---|
| One to four people | The statutory fare for your destination plus US$15 | The whole car one way, a licensed driver, and the car held against your flight or ship arrival |
| Five or more people | The statutory per person rate plus US$15 | The same, charged by the head |
| Return trip | A second fare plus US$15 | Booked as its own transfer, with the same driver where you ask for one |
Not in the price: waiting after the first 15 minutes, luggage, pets on the airport run, the late night surcharge, and anything you buy on the way. The first four of those are set by the same regulations and are listed further down.
What is the fare to where you are going?
There are no meters in St Kitts. Every figure in these two tables is a legal maximum under the Vehicles and Road Traffic (Maximum Fares) (Amendment) Regulations 2021, SR&O No. 2 of 2021, made on 14 January 2021. A driver may charge you less than the maximum. No driver may charge more.
Each fare is for one to four people in the car, one way. From five people up the fare becomes a per person rate, shown in the third column.

The extras the schedule allows
| Extra | Price | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting | US$5 or EC$13 per 15 minutes | After the first 15 minutes on arrival, which are free |
| Luggage | US$1 or EC$3 an item | Per piece |
| Pets | US$10 or EC$27 a pet | Airport schedule only |
| Late night | an additional US$20 | Between 11pm and 5am |
Three things in that schedule catch people out. A fare buys the car and not a seat in it, so four of you travelling together pay one fare between you, and from five people up it switches to the per person rate. The trip back is a second fare, charged again. And the first 15 minutes of waiting are free.
Here is how that works in money. Four of you from the cruise port to Cockleshell Bay pay US$40 between you, so US$55 with our fee. Five of you pay US$10 each, which is US$50, so US$65 with our fee. Going home is another US$40 or US$50.
One honest caveat. This schedule was made on 14 January 2021 and we have found no amendment since, so it is coming up on five years old. We re-check it before each season and we will say so on this page when it moves. Several travel sites still print a 50 percent night surcharge between 10pm and 6am. The 2021 regulations replaced that with a flat extra US$20 between 11pm and 5am, so if a driver quotes you half again on a late arrival, the schedule is on your side.
You can tell a licensed car by its plate. Licensed taxis here carry a yellow number plate with the letter T on it. No T, no licence.
How long does it take, and will it fit a ship day?
From the cruise port, most of Basseterre is a few minutes away and the peninsula beaches are the long end of the island run.
Ships in Basseterre are usually alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, and the all aboard call comes before that. If you are using a transfer to reach a beach or a restaurant and come back, give us both times on the form and we will build the return around the all aboard and not the sailing time.
From the airport the car is at the kerb before you clear the hall, as long as we have the flight number. We track it.
What should you have ready?
Cash in small notes. US dollars are taken everywhere on the island and the driver will have change, but a US$100 bill for a US$8 run is a slow start.
The flight number or the ship name. We hold the car against the real arrival time, which we cannot do from a date alone.
The exact address or the villa name. Several of the destinations in these tables cover a stretch of road, and your fare is set by the band your address sits in.
A car seat if you want one for a small child. Local taxis do not carry them. Say so on the form and we will tell you what the driver can do.
Who should not book this one
Anyone who needs a metered fare or a card receipt from the car. Fares here are fixed by the schedule and most drivers settle in cash.
Anyone with more luggage than people. The fare is per car, and a party of four with eight cases needs a van, which we quote separately before you commit.
If you use a wheelchair, book it and tell us on the form. An accessible vehicle takes notice to arrange and we will tell you plainly what we can get for your date.
What happens if the weather turns, or your flight or ship is late?
A late flight costs you nothing. We book against the arrival on the board, so a two hour delay moves the pickup and the waiting clock does not start.
A late ship works the same way. If your call is cancelled or the ship skips St Kitts, you pay nothing and anything already paid comes back in full.
If heavy rain closes a road on the rainforest side, the driver takes the other way round the island or holds until it clears. If we cannot get you there at all, you get the whole amount back with no fee.
Book it
Tell us the date, the time, where you are coming from and where you are going, how many people, how many bags, and your flight number or ship name. We confirm the car with the driver and come back within one working day with the fare from the schedule plus the US$15. Nothing is charged until the transfer is confirmed.
Questions people ask
Why pay you anything when the fare is fixed by law?
For the car being there. The US$15 buys a named driver booked against your arrival, a fare agreed in writing before you land, and a number to call if the car is not where it should be. Walk up to the rank at the pier and you get the same legal fare without any of that, which on a one ship day is fine and on a four ship day is a queue.
Is the fare per person or per car?
Per car, one way, for one to four people. Five and up pay the per person rate in the third column. Four of you to Frigate Bay is US$20 in total. Five of you is US$25.
Does the fare include getting back?
No. The return is a second fare at the same rate, and this is the single thing most visitors get wrong. Book both legs with us and the US$15 applies to each.
How much waiting is free?
The first 15 minutes on arrival. After that the schedule allows US$5 or EC$13 for every 15 minutes, so a driver who sits for an hour while you shop can charge US$15 on top of the fare.
What about late at night?
Between 11pm and 5am the schedule allows an additional US$20 flat on the fare. Nothing else changes, and the per person rate above four people stays as it is.
Can I pay in EC dollars?
Yes. Both columns come from the same schedule and the EC figure is the legal equivalent, so pay in whichever you are carrying. Change usually comes back in EC.
