Half island and beach tour

From US$70 a person, based on four of you sharing. The vehicle is US$279 for up to four people, three hours door to door, with the entry fees and a drink in it. Three hours west out of Basseterre and back, with a swim at the end: the town’s landmarks, Romney Manor with its batik works and its garden, the ridge at Timothy Hill, then the vehicle pulls up at a beach for the last stretch. Book this one if your ship is in for a short call, or if you are travelling with small children who will not last four hours in a seat.

The price covers an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide, Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik entry, one drink, the beach stop, and collection and return at Port Zante or your hotel. Children 3 to 12 count inside the party of four, and anyone under 3 goes free. Car seats are not carried as standard, so bring one if you want it. Lunch is not in the price. A beach chair runs about US$10 if you want one, towels are not handed out, and anything you buy in the batik shop is yours.

Two people pay US$279 and three people pay US$279, because the price buys the car and not the seat.

If we have another booking on your date we will offer to pair you with it and bring the price down, and the booking form asks whether you are willing to share.

What do you see in three hours?

The town first, most of it from the vehicle. Independence Square with its fountain, the green clock at the Circus, and the old stone Treasury Building at the water’s edge, with the driver pulling over where there is room to get out and stand.

Then the coast road west to Old Road, where Romney Manor sits above the village on the slope. The garden is built around a saman tree reckoned at more than 350 years old, and the batik workers wax and dye cloth in the yard where you can stand and watch a piece being made. Walking in on your own costs US$3. Yours is paid.

Timothy Hill is next, up on the ridge where the island narrows to a neck. Caribbean on one side, Atlantic on the other, both in the same photograph.

The beach stop is below that ridge on the South East Peninsula. We confirm which beach when we confirm the tour, because it turns on where the vendors have set up that day and how many ships are alongside. You get roughly forty minutes in the water.

None of the beaches here are supervised. There are no lifeguards and no warning flags anywhere on this island, and Canada’s government travel advice says rescue services may not meet the standards a visitor is used to. That is why your guide stays with the group at the beach and tells you where the water pulls.

How long does it take, and will it fit a ship day?

Three hours door to door, which leaves most cruise passengers half of their day spare.

Ships sit alongside Basseterre from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm. The port has 489 calls booked between August 2026 and April 2027, 101 of them in December alone, so four ships in one day is ordinary in the season and the peninsula road fills up by mid-morning. An early start gets you onto the ridge ahead of the queue of vehicles.

What should you bring?

Your swimsuit, already on under your clothes. There is no changing room at the beach stop, and the people who planned to change end up doing it behind a vehicle door.

A towel. Nobody hands them out and the chair vendors do not rent them.

Closed shoes. The path through the garden at Romney Manor is gravel and tree root, and it stays slick for a while after a shower.

Small notes. A chair is about US$10, the batik pieces start at a few dollars, and US currency is taken everywhere on the island.

Sun cover for the beach. Most of the peninsula beaches have shade under the sea grape, and it goes early.

Who should not book this one

Anyone who cannot manage the walk at Romney Manor. The ground there is uneven and it slopes, and that garden is the whole point of the stop.

Children in the water stay your responsibility. Your guide watches the group, he is no lifeguard, and a small child belongs within arm’s reach of an adult.

If you use a wheelchair, say so on the form. An accessible vehicle takes notice to arrange, and we will tell you which of the stops you can get into and which you will see from the road.

What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?

A shower does not stop this tour. The stops are short or covered, and rain here passes inside twenty minutes.

If the sea is up and the beach is unusable, the swim moves to a sheltered bay on the Caribbean side. On the rare day when nothing on the coast is safe to swim, we say so before you pay, and you can take the four hour island tour instead or walk away.

If your ship docks late, the driver is given the real arrival time and waits for it. A cancelled call costs you nothing, and any money already taken comes back whole.

Book it

Tell us your date, how many adults and children, where to collect you, and the name of your ship if you are on one. Five or more in the party, say so, because the vehicle changes and so does the price. Tell us too whether you are willing to share with another booking. We check the slot with the driver and come back inside one working day, then we send a payment link. Nothing is charged before the tour is confirmed.

Questions people ask

How does this compare with a taxi doing the same run?

The statutory maximum for the half island run, Basseterre to Fairview to Caribelle Batik, with a two and a half hour ceiling, is US$80 or EC$217 for one to four people, or US$20 a head for five or more. The 2021 fare regulations set that as a ceiling, there are no meters on this island, and a driver may go under the maximum but never over it. What that fare buys is the driving. Four people arranging it themselves pay the US$80 plus US$3 a head at Romney Manor, so US$92 against our US$279. On top of ours sit the entry, the drink, the time at the beach and a guide who knows which stall is open.

Is this the full island tour cut short?

It is a different route. Brimstone Hill and Black Rocks are left out, and an hour at the coast is put in. If the fortress is the thing you came for, take the four hour tour, or take Brimstone Hill on its own.

Can we swap the beach stop for lunch?

Yes. Say so on the form and the driver builds in a stop on the peninsula, where a plate runs about US$15 to US$30 a head.

Will three hours get us back for a 5pm all aboard?

Comfortably, if you go in the morning. A 9am start has you back at Port Zante around noon.

Do you take children under three?

Yes, free, on a lap or in your own car seat. The beach stop is the reason most families pick this tour over the long one.
