Full day private island tour

From US$165 a person, based on four of you sharing. The vehicle is US$659 for up to four people, five to five and a half hours, with the entry fees, lunch and a drink in it. The route is the one the four hour tour takes, Romney Manor, Brimstone Hill, Black Rocks and Timothy Hill, with the clock taken off it and real time at every stop. The vehicle carries your party only. This is the version for a guest staying on the island with a whole day to give it.

The price covers a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver and guide for the day, Brimstone Hill admission, Romney Manor admission, a sit-down lunch with a drink, bottled water, and collection and return at your hotel, villa or Port Zante. Children 3 to 12 count inside the party of four and get a child portion at lunch. Anyone under 3 goes free, so bring a car seat if you want one. An accessible vehicle is arranged with notice at no extra charge. Lunch includes a vegetarian main for anyone who needs one. Drinks past the one at lunch are not in the price, and neither is anything you buy at Caribelle Batik or at the fortress shop.

Two people pay US$659 and three people pay US$659, because the price buys the car and not the seat.

If we have another booking on your date we will offer to pair you with it and bring the price down, and the booking form asks whether you are willing to share.

What does the extra hour and a half buy you?

Time at the top of Brimstone Hill, mostly. The four hour tour gives you the Citadel and the view. Five hours gives you the lower bastions as well, the cannon sitting in the embrasures, and twenty minutes to be up there without somebody counting heads.

At Romney Manor it buys the back of the garden. The saman tree reckoned at over 350 years old is the one everybody photographs, and the paths behind it, with the mountain coming down into the property, are where people end up staying. Inside the house you can watch a batik piece go from wax to dye to the line, which takes longer than the ten minutes a rushed stop allows.

Black Rocks on the Atlantic side is lava off Mount Liamuiga that ran into the sea and set there. Nobody swims on that coast. On a full day you get down onto the viewing point and along it, instead of looking at the Atlantic through a window.

Lunch is the part that turns a tour into a day. You sit down at a local place on the route, you eat St Kitts food, and the vehicle waits with the engine off.

Timothy Hill closes it, late enough in the afternoon that the light is off the water and down the peninsula, Caribbean on one hand and Atlantic on the other.

Mount Liamuiga stands over the whole route at 3,792 ft, and your guide will point out the crater rim on the days the cloud lifts off it.

How long does it take, and do you have to be on a ship?

Five to five and a half hours, door to door, and no, you do not.

This tour was built for people staying here. Cruise calls sit alongside Basseterre from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, which is why nearly everything else sold on this island is cut to three or four hours. A guest in a hotel at Frigate Bay has no all aboard to run for, so the stops get the length they deserve. It still works on a ship day if your call is a long one and you dock early, and we will tell you plainly when your window is too tight for it.

What should you bring?

Closed shoes with a grip. Brimstone Hill is cobbled and steep, with steps and no handrail in places, and it is the one stop that punishes sandals.

Sun cover for the fortress. It is open rock with barely any shade and you will be on it before lunch.

A light layer for the rainforest side, where a shower comes through most afternoons and is gone inside twenty minutes.

Small notes. Caribelle Batik takes cards and the roadside fruit stalls do not. US dollars are fine everywhere.

Your own bottle if you drink a lot of water. We carry bottled water, and five hours in this heat goes through more than you expect.

Who should not book this one

Anyone who needs a short day. Five hours is five hours, and there is walking inside it at three of the four stops.

Anyone who cannot do steps on uneven stone will see Brimstone Hill from the lower levels. The Citadel is cobbles and flights of steps with nothing to hold onto.

If you use a wheelchair, book it and say so on the form. An accessible vehicle can be arranged with notice at no extra charge to you, and before you pay we will tell you which stops you will get into, which of them have made paths, and which you will be seeing from the road. Nobody should find that out on the day.

What happens if the weather turns, or your plans change?

Rain does not stop this day out. The vehicle is covered, the stops are short, and a shower here is twenty minutes of your five hours.

A wet morning at Brimstone Hill is the one real problem, because the cobbles get slippery. Your driver can run the route the other way round and come back to the fortress in the afternoon, which is one of the things a private vehicle lets you do.

Cancel more than 24 hours out and you pay nothing. If your flight or your ship falls through, or if we cannot run the day for a reason on our side, you get the whole amount back with no fee.

Book it

Tell us your date, how many adults and children, where to collect you, whether anyone needs an accessible vehicle, and anything we should pass to the kitchen about food. Five or more in the party, say so, because the vehicle changes and so does the price. Tell us too whether you are willing to share with another booking. We confirm the vehicle and the lunch stop, come back to you inside one working day, and send the payment link after that. Nothing is charged before the day is confirmed.

Questions people ask

What would a taxi charge for a day like this?

The 2021 maximum fare schedule caps the full island tour, Historical Basseterre to Timothy Hill at four to four and a half hours, at US$100 or EC$270 for one to four people, or US$25 a head for five or more. Four people arranging it themselves pay that US$100, plus US$18 a head in entry fees, plus about US$25 a head for lunch, so roughly US$272 against our US$659. Then there is the clock. The same schedule lets a driver charge US$5 or EC$13 for every 15 minutes of waiting after the first 15, and five hours with an hour at the fortress and an hour at lunch is eight of those on top. We are dearer either way. What the difference buys is a vehicle that is yours for the day, a guide for the whole of it, and nobody counting quarter hours while you eat.

Is it genuinely private?

Yes. Your party and your driver, nobody else in the vehicle, and the route is yours to change on the day.

Can we swap a stop for a beach?

Yes, and plenty of people put an hour at the South East Peninsula in place of Black Rocks. The beaches here have no lifeguards and no warning flags, and Canada’s government travel advice says rescue services may not meet the standards you are used to, so your guide comes down to the water with the group.

Is the lunch any good, and what if we do not eat meat?

It is a local kitchen on the route and the fish is usually the thing to have. A vegetarian main is in the price. Tell us about allergies on the form and we hand that to the kitchen when we book.

How many people fit in the vehicle?

A family or a small group, with a larger vehicle for a party taking the whole day. Give us your numbers on the form and we size it to them.

Can we start early?

Yes. An 8:30am start gets you to Brimstone Hill shortly after the gate opens at 9:30am, which is the coolest and emptiest hour on that hill.
