A four hour guided walk into the rainforest from Wingfield Estate, on the Peter Manning Trail, taking in the Carib petroglyphs cut into the rock by the people who were here before Columbus. US$89 an adult, US$55 a child, with pickup and an open-air safari truck out to the trailhead. It is rated moderate, and it fits inside a cruise day with hours to spare.
What it costs
| Price | What is in it | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | US$89 | Hotel or Port Zante pickup and return, open-air safari truck to the trailhead, a guide, local drinks, light snacks |
| Child, 8 to 12 | US$55 | The same |
| Longer valley version | priced on request | A bigger loop through a valley of older, taller trees. Ask us and we will quote it |
Lunch is not included. Neither is insect repellent, and neither is anything you buy at Caribelle Batik if you add Romney Manor to the day.
An online agency sells a rainforest hike at US$60, US$29 under ours. That US$29 buys the pickup from your hotel or the pier, the open-air safari truck out to the trailhead, a guide, local drinks and light snacks on the trail, and an 8:30am start that has you back in town by early afternoon.
What do you actually see?
You start at Wingfield Estate at Old Road, which is free to walk into and worth half an hour on its own. The stone bones of a seventeenth century sugar mill are still standing there, and the rum distillery on the site dates to 1681.
From the estate the Peter Manning Trail climbs into the forest. The canopy closes over you within a few minutes and the temperature drops with it. Underfoot it is root and wet clay.
The petroglyphs are the reason most people come. They are carvings cut into boulders by the island’s pre-Columbian inhabitants, figures scored straight into the rock where it lies. Your guide will point out the ones you would walk straight past.
Higher up the trees get older and the trunks get wide enough that two people cannot reach around them. That stretch is in the longer version of the walk.
Every hike goes out with a guide. The St Kitts Tourism Authority opened a registration for hiking and trail guides in 2026 and closed it on 10 July, and we book guides who put their names on that registry.
How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?
Four hours door to door, leaving at 8:30am.
Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm. An 8:30am start has you back at Port Zante in the early afternoon with three or four hours in hand, which is why this is the hike we sell to cruise passengers. The volcano hike is six hours plus transfers and it does not fit that window. If someone has sold you Mount Liamuiga on a day call, check your all-aboard time before you pay for it.
What should you bring?
Trainers with grip, or light boots. It is rainforest, so the trail is muddy for most of the year and sandals will come off in it.
Insect repellent, on before you get in the truck. The forest floor is damp and the mosquitoes find bare ankles within the first ten minutes.
A light layer. The rainforest side of the island gets a passing shower most afternoons and it stops as quickly as it starts.
A dry shirt in a bag, if you are going back to a ship afterwards. You will sweat through the one you are wearing even on a cool morning.
Who should not book this one
Anyone who cannot manage four hours on their feet, on uneven ground, with some climbing.
Anyone with a knee or ankle problem. The surface is wet clay over tree roots and there is nothing to hold on to.
Children under eight. They can do the distance on a good day and most of them do not enjoy the mud.
Anyone who needs flat, level footing. There is none of it on this trail.
What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?
Rain is part of the product here. The trail is wet in dry weather and a shower in the canopy barely reaches you, so the walk goes ahead and nobody turns back for it.
Sustained heavy rain is the one thing that stops it. The guide can call it at the trailhead, and if that happens you pay nothing, or the whole amount comes back if you have already paid. There is no fee and no credit note.
If your ship arrives late your pickup moves with it, because we book against the actual arrival time and not the scheduled one. A four hour hike absorbs an hour of delay without trouble. If the call is cancelled altogether, or the ship skips St Kitts, you pay nothing.
Book it
Tell us your date, how many adults and children, where to collect you, and your ship name if you are on one. Say if you want the longer valley version and we will quote it. We confirm the slot with the guide and come back to you within one working day, and only then do we send a payment link. Nothing is charged until the hike is confirmed.
Questions people ask
What would it cost me to go to Wingfield Estate on my own?
Nothing at the gate. Wingfield Estate is free to walk into, and Romney Manor next door, where Caribelle Batik works, charges US$3. What you are paying us for is the guide, the drive out to Old Road and back, and someone who knows which boulders carry the carvings.
How old are the petroglyphs?
Nobody will give you a firm date, and we are not going to invent one. They were cut by the island’s pre-Columbian inhabitants, which puts them centuries before the first European landing, and they sit in the open on the rock where they were carved.
Is this the same thing as the volcano hike?
No. This is four hours on a rainforest trail at moderate grade. Mount Liamuiga is six hours to a crater rim at 3,792 ft, rated moderate to strenuous, and it is sold as a separate hike on this site.
Can we add Romney Manor or Brimstone Hill to the day?
Yes, and it is the commonest change people make. Romney Manor is a few minutes from the trailhead at US$3 to walk in. Brimstone Hill is US$15 and worth a morning of its own. Say so on the form and we will price the combination.
Will we see monkeys?
Probably, and we will not promise it. The green vervet monkeys are all over that side of the island and they come down near the trail in the early morning, which is part of why the walk starts at 8:30am.
Do we tip the guide?
Tips are appreciated and not required. Ten to fifteen percent is normal here.
