Full island tour

From US$97 a person, based on four of you sharing. The vehicle is US$389 for up to four people, four to four and a half hours, with every entry fee already paid. A drive around the whole island, stopping at Brimstone Hill, Romney Manor, Black Rocks and Timothy Hill. It fits inside a cruise day and it is the one tour to take if you are only here once.

The price covers an air-conditioned vehicle, the driver and guide, Brimstone Hill admission, Romney Manor admission, bottled water, and pickup and return at your hotel or Port Zante. Children 3 to 12 count inside the party of four, and anyone under 3 goes free, so bring a car seat if you want one. Lunch is not included. Neither are drinks beyond the water, and neither is anything you buy at Caribelle Batik.

Two people pay US$389 and three people pay US$389, because the price buys the car and not the seat.

If we have another booking on your date we will offer to pair you with it and bring the price down, and the booking form asks whether you are willing to share.

What do you actually see?

You leave Basseterre on the main road and go clockwise, which puts the Caribbean on your left for the first hour.

Romney Manor comes first, a seventeenth century estate house at Old Road with a garden built around a saman tree that is reckoned at over 350 years old. Caribelle Batik works out of the house itself, and you can watch the wax and dye process in the yard. Walking in costs US$3 on your own. It is in your tour price.

Brimstone Hill is the stop people remember. It is a British fortress on a volcanic cone 800 feet above the sea, built by enslaved Africans over roughly a hundred years from 1690, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. From the Citadel you can see Nevis, Sint Eustatius, Saba and St Barths on a clear day. Admission is US$15 for a visitor, and it is in your price.

Black Rocks sits on the Atlantic side near Sandy Point. The rock is lava from Mount Liamuiga that ran into the sea and cooled there. The water on that coast is rough and there is no swimming.

Timothy Hill is the last stop and the reason everyone’s camera comes out. From the ridge you look down on the South East Peninsula with the Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic on the other, close enough together to fit in one photograph.

How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?

Four to four and a half hours, door to door.

Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm. A morning departure puts you back at Port Zante with two hours in hand, which is why nearly every excursion sold on this island runs three to five hours. If your ship is on a short call, say so on the booking form and we will cut the tour to the shape that fits rather than rush it.

What should you bring?

Closed shoes or trainers. Brimstone Hill is cobbled, uneven and steep in places, and sandals are the commonest regret of the day.

Cash in small notes. Caribelle Batik and the roadside stalls take cards, but the US$5 and US$10 purchases go faster in cash. US dollars are accepted everywhere on the island.

Sun cover. The fortress is open rock with almost no shade, and you will be on it in the middle of the day.

A light layer. The rainforest side of the island gets a passing shower most afternoons and it stops as quickly as it starts.

Who should not book this one

Anyone who needs to stay seated the whole time. There is real walking at Brimstone Hill, on slopes, with steps and no handrail in several places.

If you use a wheelchair, book it anyway and tell us on the form. An accessible vehicle can be arranged with notice, and we will tell you plainly which stops you will be able to get to and which you will see from the road.

What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?

Rain does not cancel this tour. It is a drive with stops, the vehicle is covered, and a shower passes in twenty minutes.

If your ship arrives late, your driver waits. We book pickups against the ship’s actual arrival and not its scheduled one. If the call is cancelled or the ship skips St Kitts entirely, you pay nothing, and anything already paid comes back in full.

If we cannot fulfil the tour for any reason on our side, you get the whole amount back. There is no fee and no credit note.

Book it

Tell us your date, how many adults and children, where to collect you, and your ship name if you are on one. Five or more in the party, say so, because the vehicle changes and so does the price. Tell us too whether you are willing to share with another booking. We confirm the slot with the driver and come back to you within one working day, and only then do we send a payment link. Nothing is charged until the tour is confirmed.

Questions people ask

What does a taxi cost for the same route?

The government caps it. Under the Vehicles and Road Traffic (Maximum Fares) Regulations 2021, the maximum fare for the Historical Basseterre to Timothy Hill tour, four to four and a half hours, is US$100 or EC$270 for one to four people, and US$25 or EC$68 a head for five or more. There are no meters on this island and a driver may charge less than the maximum but never more. Four people arranging it themselves pay that US$100 for the car plus US$18 a head in entry fees, so US$172 against our US$389. What the fare does not buy is the admissions settled before you arrive, the water, or a guide who can tell you what you are looking at. If the saving matters more to you than the guide, do it that way.

Are the entry fees really included?

Yes, both of them. Brimstone Hill at US$15 and Romney Manor at US$3. If you hold a St Kitts and Nevis government ID the fortress charges you EC$10 instead, so tell us and we will take it off.

Can we stop for lunch?

Yes, and it is the one change most people make. Say so on the form and the driver builds in a stop. Expect US$15 to US$30 a head at a local spot on the route.

Is this the scenic railway?

No. The railway is a separate three hour trip on the old sugar train out of Needsmust, and we do not sell it. Buy that one through your cruise line.

How many people are in the vehicle?

This is a private tour. The vehicle carries your party only. If you want to share one to bring the cost down, ask, and we will tell you whether anything is running on your date.

Do we tip the driver?

Tips are appreciated and not required. If you want a figure, ten to fifteen percent is normal here.
