Three hours door to door, about an hour and a half of it on the machine, through cane fields and forest paths above Old Road Town. US$159 a driver and US$75 for a child riding as a passenger, with transport from your hotel or Port Zante already in the price. You have to be 16 to drive one. It suits anyone happy to get filthy and nobody who wants to stay clean.
What it costs
| Price | What is in it | |
|---|---|---|
| Driver, 16 or over | US$159 | One ATV, helmet, goggles, safety orientation, guide, transport from your hotel or Port Zante and back |
| Child passenger | US$75 | A seat behind an adult driver, with the same helmet and goggles |
| ATV and beach, per driver | US$215 | Ninety minutes riding plus time at the beach, same kit and same transport |
Food and drink are not in the price. On the beach version nothing at the beach is either, so carry small notes for a chair or a cold drink. Chairs and umbrellas run about US$10 each where they are rented.
The online agencies sell this same ride between US$110 and US$148.50, so we sit above the top of that band. What the gap pays for is the run out from your hotel or Port Zante and back, four departures a day to choose from, the helmet and goggles, and a safety orientation before anyone touches a throttle.
What is the ride actually like?
You start at Wingfield Estate on Wingfield Road, a few minutes up from Old Road Town on the west coast. Helmets and goggles come out first, then the safety orientation: throttle, brake, how to hold a line behind the guide. Nobody rides until that is done.
From there the route runs through cane fields and along forest paths, and it finishes at the sugar estate ruins.
The ground is dirt and cane dust. In the dry months it goes up in a cloud behind the machine in front of you. After rain it goes brown up your calves instead. Either way you are not coming back clean, and that is most of the fun of it.
Walking into Wingfield Estate on your own is free. Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik are next door at Old Road and cost US$3 at the gate, which is worth half an hour if the ride has not finished you off.
Riding time is about an hour and a half of the three. The rest is the drive out, the kit, the orientation and the drive back.
How long does it take, and will it fit a cruise day?
Three hours, door to door. There are four departures a day, at 8:30am, 11:00am, 12:00pm and 1:00pm.
Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, which is why nearly every excursion sold on this island runs three to five hours. The 8:30am and 11:00am runs put you back at Port Zante with hours in hand. The 1:00pm run is tight against a 5pm all-aboard, and we will tell you that when you ask for it instead of letting you find out.
What should you wear?
Closed-toe shoes. Trainers are right, sandals and flip flops will stop you at the start, and the operator does not bend on this one.
Clothes you do not mind ruining. Cane dust gets into the weave and some of it never washes out.
A long sleeved shirt. It does more against the dust than it costs you in heat.
Goggles are provided, so leave the sunglasses behind. Loose ones come off anyway.
Cash in small notes. US dollars are accepted everywhere on the island.
Who should not book this one
You have to be 16 to drive. That is the published minimum on the operators we use and no signature from a parent gets round it.
Anyone under 16 rides as a passenger behind an adult, which costs US$75. A child needs to be big enough to hold on and sit still for an hour and a half on rough ground.
If you cannot grip hard with both hands, do not take the driving seat. Take the passenger seat and let someone else fight the handlebars.
No weight limit is published for the ATVs. If that matters to you, say so on the form and we will put the question to the operator before you pay anything.
What happens if the weather turns, or your ship is late?
A shower does not cancel it. Mud is part of it, and the guide drops the pace on a wet track instead of cutting the ride short. If the estate closes the tracks because the ground will not take a machine, you get the whole amount back, or a later slot the same day where one is open.
If your ship arrives late, your pickup moves with it. We book against the ship’s actual arrival and not its scheduled one. If the call is cancelled, or the ship skips St Kitts entirely, you pay nothing and anything already paid comes back in full.
Book it
Tell us your date, which departure you want, how many drivers and how many child passengers, where to collect you, and your ship name if you are on one. We confirm the machines with the operator and come back to you within one working day, and the payment link comes after that. Nothing is charged until the ride is confirmed.
Questions people ask
Do you need a driving licence or a local permit for this?
No. Driving a hire car yourself in St Kitts needs a temporary local permit, EC$62.50 for three months or about US$23, bought on top of the rental. An ATV tour needs no permit and no local licence, because you ride with the operator’s permission on the estate’s own land and tracks, behind their guide.
Can a child come?
Yes, as a passenger behind an adult, at US$75. Sixteen is the minimum age to drive a machine.
How much of the three hours is on the machine?
About an hour and a half. The rest is pickup, kit, the orientation and the ride back to town.
Is there a cheaper way to see Wingfield Estate?
Yes. Walk in. The estate is free on foot and Romney Manor next door is US$3 at the gate. Neither of those gets you onto the tracks, which are the whole reason to book this.
What does the beach version add?
Ninety minutes riding and then beach time, for US$215 a driver. The beaches here have no lifeguards and no warning flags, and Canada’s government travel advice says rescue services may not meet international standards. The guide stays with the group in the water for that reason.
Do we tip the guide?
Tips are appreciated and not required. Ten to fifteen percent is normal here.
